Meet Patti Blau, the brilliant illustrator behind our cheerful puzzle "Sunny Afternoon." Her vibrant, light-filled artwork perfectly captures the joy and warmth of a perfect day, making us eager to collaborate with her for these bright moments. We caught up with her and chatted about what sparks her creativity during sunny days, her favorite sources of inspiration when the light is just right, and who she'd invite to her dream dinner party.
What’s one thing we should know about you?
As an artist, I have a creative soul that shapes my life experiences.
What puts you in the mood to create?
When I am inspired to take note of something. Art for me is a discussion. An environment, an experience, people, objects or even just observing colors.
What’s your favorite rule or rule to break?
"It can't be done."
If you had to live in another place it would be...
That's a toss up because the Caribbean is really my first love, but lately I have been enjoying California. It's a completely different climate, but the light there is inspirational and I enjoy the lifestyle.
A current cultural obsession?
Not sure I have one!
Ideal venue or menu?
A good meal is everything! I'm particularly obsessed with the hand rolls at KazuNori right now, but good Italian food is also a pleasure!
Who’s joining?
My friends. We all appreciate good food!
A few books for the coffee table?
I have so many books on my coffee table! Taschen History of Graphic Design, 70's Decorative Arts, Andy Warhol Illustrations, Afro-Atlantic Histories, Alex Katz, Maira Kalman, Basquiat!
What's the last thing you listened to?
Unfortunately, I will have to say the news.
First thing you’d grab in a fire?
Since I live in a hurricane prone area, I keep many of those precious things organized in a bag already...but, some memorabilia from the early art scene in NYC, family photos and documents, and of course whatever irreplaceable things I could save. My digital life lives in the iCloud!
What were you most grateful for when you woke up this morning?
Grateful to be alive and have a new day.
